Cities are living organisms, constantly growing and evolving. Today’s challenge is to make them smarter, greener, and resilient in the face of climate change. That’s where Green Urban Data steps in. Based in Valencia, Spain, the company transforms raw environmental data—such as satellite imagery—into actionable insights that help cities design better green spaces, improve urban health, and enhance climate resilience. As part of the I3-INSHAPE project, Green Urban Data is collaborating with the Dutch SME ViNotion to co-develop GreenMotion AI, an innovative solution designed to monitor and improve how people use urban spaces for healthier, more active lifestyles. Jose Ferrer, Innovation Director, introduced us to the company for this new chapter of SMEs in the Spotlight.

Jose, please introduce your company in a few words.

Green Urban Data is a tech company based in Valencia, Spain. We help cities become more sustainable and healthier by turning environmental data—like satellite imagery—into useful insights that support urban planning and green space management. What makes us unique is how we integrate different data sources and turn complex geospatial information into clear, actionable insights—so cities can make faster, smarter decisions for climate resilience and healthier urban environments.

What kind of solutions or services does Green Urban Data offer? How do you stand out in the market?

We provide digital tools (web platforms, mobile apps, API data integration…) that deliver key indicators on green infrastructure planning and management, climate resilience monitoring, and urban health improvements.

We also offer specialised consulting services to support the planning and management of green infrastructure. This allows us to adapt our solutions to each city’s specific context and needs, combining data with expert guidance.

We stand out thanks to our combined approach: we offer both smart technology and solid expertise in urban planning and green infrastructure. This helps cities not just access data but use it to improve green spaces and urban quality of life.

What type of solution are you and your SME partner developing together in the framework of the I3-INSHAPE project? How is your collaboration structured?

We’re partnering as co-developers with ViNotion, a Dutch company that specialises in AI-powered video analytics. Our common main goal is to develop GreenMotion AI—a combination of hardware and software to monitor how people use open spaces (sports or green areas) and how these areas support healthy, active lifestyles.

We are developing a joint solution that combines ViNotion’s strong expertise in smart camera technology and mobility flow analysis with our strengths in environmental data analytics, with the goal of improving urban environmental quality, people’s health and well-being.

Our collaboration is structured in several phases, starting with market research and exploring use cases across different countries, followed by technical integration and MVP development. Then we move on to real-life testing in urban environments, where we gather feedback, refine the solution, and prepare to scale it across the European market. It’s a strong example of how two SMEs from different regions can join forces to create real business opportunities and co-develop a practical tool for public institutions, private companies, and organisations focused on health and well-being.

What tangible impact does the I3-INSHAPE project have on your project idea, from the development to market access?

It’s been a great boost for us. Thanks to I3-INSHAPE, we’re discovering new business opportunities by integrating our technology into solutions for sectors like sports and vitality. The support goes far beyond funding, it’s guiding us through every phase of the process.

Since the beginning, INSHAPE has helped us organise and monitor the project’s progress, keeping us aligned with our goals. It’s also supporting us in the validation phase, by giving visibility and connecting us with partners to develop pilot projects in real contexts.

Looking ahead, INSHAPE is helping us think long term. It’s giving us the tools and network to build a structure ready to scale, both in Europe and internationally. Without this support, reaching this point would have taken much more time and effort, or simply wouldn’t have been possible.

Why do you think initiatives like I3-INSHAPE and its innovation hubs are essential for the future of sport and vitality in Europe?

Because they connect innovation, health, and cities in a really smart way. They create space for collaboration between small companies,

researchers, and public institutions, so we can co-develop solutions that actually make cities more active and healthy environments.

What are your expectations for the future within the I3-INSHAPE project?

Our goal is to fully validate GreenMotion AI and show how it adds value to both public & private entities and city residents. We also hope to keep collaborating with other INSHAPE partners and eventually scale to more cities across Europe.

What’s one key takeaway you’d like people to remember about INSHAPE?

INSHAPE is more than just a project: It’s a powerful network that drives real innovation to support the sport and vitality sector across Europe.
